London Marathon Events (LME) has partnered with South Thames Colleges Group to launch a course providing a pathway for sports event professionals.
South Thames Colleges Group will deliver a Level 4 HNC Sports Event Management qualification aimed at 18–25-year-olds looking for an alternative to university. The education programme is the first to be announced by LME’s new education business LMEd.
LME said the course will combine recognised qualifications alongside industry-led learning and real-world experience. The aim is to provide pathways into the industry through access to skills, opportunities and in-class learning. It said the decline in job and career opportunities for young people was a motivation to set up LMEd.
The course aligns with new PM Andy Burnham’s push to provide young people with more practical pathways into employment, outlined in his education reforms.
Similar educational initiatives focusing on industry learning have been developed by organisations such as The Power of Events and Continental Drift, which offers practical learning through its Festival Lab programme.
“As London Marathon Events continues to expand its portfolio across London, the UK and internationally, it is vital that our workforce reflects the diversity of the communities we serve,” said LME CEO Hugh Brasher. “We are proud to launch LMEd, our new education business, and partner with South Thames Colleges Group to help inspire, develop and equip the next generation of sports event professionals.
“At a time when employment opportunities for young people are scarce, our industry continues to thrive. Through high-quality training and hands-on learning, we hope many graduates of these programmes will go on to build successful careers and play a key role in delivering world-class events in the years ahead.”
South Thames Colleges Group executive principle John O’Shea said, “This unique collaboration gives our students unrivalled access to real-world experience, working alongside industry professionals at the heart of major live events. At STCG University Centre, we are committed to delivering career-focused higher education, and this programme offers a truly exceptional opportunity for learners to develop the skills, insight and networks needed to succeed in the sports events industry.”
