Max SteventonThe 2025 TCS London Marathon has received Evergreen certification from the Council for Responsible Sport, marking the first time a marathon in the UK has achieved the programme’s highest level of recognition.
The certification follows an assessment of the event’s environmental and social practices. According to the Council, the marathon earned 61 out of a possible 66 credits, improving on the 55 credits it received in 2023 when it achieved Gold certification. The award also builds on Evergreen certification granted in 2024 to the event organiser, London Marathon Events.
In its assessment, the Council cited structured sustainability planning, procurement policies favouring environmentally and socially responsible suppliers, and a formal waste management plan that includes recycling infrastructure and tracking systems. The evaluation also noted accessibility initiatives, including an inclusion advisory group and diversity guidance for event teams.
The Council further recognised the event’s community impact. Participants in the TCS London Marathon raised a record £87.3 million for charitable causes in 2025, bringing the cumulative total raised since the marathon began in 1981 to £1.4 billion.
“Meaningful change can only happen when we work together, and we remain committed to collaborating with our participants, partners, and stakeholders to drive progress”, said London Marathon Events CEO Hugh Brasher. “Our hope is that this achievement inspires others to join us in creating a more equitable, environmentally conscious, and active society.”
Council for Responsible Sport evaluator Patricia Narváez said, “Initiatives such as Tees for Trees, the use of biofuels, the introduction of water refill stations, and medals made from recycled metals demonstrate impressive innovation. The event’s community legacy is equally meaningful — through projects like the new Green assembly area, the TCS London Marathon is redefining how participants and communities engage with mass sporting events.
