Outdoor arts events specialists Walk the Plank have been selected as directors of Hull’s Freedom Festival, for 2014 and 2015.

The festival is the city’s annual three-day festival dedicated to the celebration and exploration of freedom through arts and culture.

The announcement follows Hull being recently named as UK City of Culture 2017.

Now entering its seventh year, the Freedom Festival has emerged as a nationally recognised platform for local, national and international artistic talent.

Last year’s event programme featured a mix of family friendly and largely free events including theatre, dance, music, poetry, visual arts and comedy.

“We’re thrilled to be returning as Freedom Festival Directors. Our work is all about bringing out the best in people and places through creativity,” said Walk the Plank’s creative producer Liz Pugh. “Given the opportunity afforded by their forthcoming UK City of Culture status, this city has the heart and passion to achieve great things, and we look forward to being a part of that journey.”

Graham Chesters, chair of Freedom Festival, said:”The Freedom Festival Board is delighted that Walk the Plank has won the tender to act as Festival Directors for us for 2014 and 2015. They did a superb job last year and we look forward to them building on key relationships forged locally last year to create another fantastic event.”

More details on Freedom Festival 2014 will be revealed in the coming months, however the board has already announced intentions to celebrate the life of Nelson Mandela, including an opportunity for visitors to pay tribute to his work.

This year’s event will take place on 5-7 September.
