Liverpool will host the Grand Depart for this year’s Tour of Britain on 7 September.

It was announced today (31 March) that the city will host the opening stage for the first time. Starting and finishing on The Strand, the 13km circuit will take racers around the city and past the Three Graces.

British cyclists Sir Bradley Wiggins, Mark Cavendish and Chris Froome are set to join the world’s best in the Tour, which takes place 7-14 September.

“We are delighted that this year’s Tour of Britain can start with such a prestigious stage in the centre of Liverpool,” said race director Mick Bennett.

Liverpool Councillor Wendy Simon commented: “There’s a real momentum building for cycling in this city. The latest figures show more people than ever are using bikes here and there’s a real appetite for it at the moment. And with the launch of our cycle hire scheme – the biggest in the UK outside of London – there has never been a better time for Liverpool to host this high profile event.”

The full national route of the Tour of Britain 2014 will be released later today.
