A roof collapse during a heavy metal concert at the Apollo Theatre in Belvidere, Illinois, on Friday evening killed one and injured 28 people.

It is understood that around 260 people, including performers and staff, were in the venue for the show by Morbid Angel when the roof failed.

It was one of a series of incidents that left at least 22 people dead after violent storms and tornadoes hit the US’s South and Midwest regions on Friday and Saturday.

Authorities said five of the 28 people hurt in the incident were severely injured.

Morbid Angel issued a statement on social media shortly after the incident at the venue that said: “Tonight’s show is cancelled due to a tornado that hit the venue. We ask anyone who is still traveling to the venue to please seek shelter and stay safe.”

Among the acts scheduled to play the 1,500-capacity venue in the coming weeks are Black Flag, Adelitas Way and Trivium.
