Mental health charity Music Support has appointed Sarah Williams as its first head of marketing and communications.

Music Support helps people working in the music industry who are experiencing substance use, addiction and mental health challenges. The organisation is led by individuals with direct experience of these issues within the music business. Its services are delivered by in-house psychotherapists and support staff with professional backgrounds in the music industry.

Williams began her career in the music industry more than 14 years ago working on The Great Escape. She has since held marketing roles at several London venues, including The Jazz Cafe, The Forum, The Barfly, Brixton Academy and Shepherd’s Bush Empire. Over the past five years Williams has worked in the charity sector focusing on engagement and awareness for Help Musicians and Music Minds Matter.

Data from the charity’s 2024 festival season wellbeing survey showed that 26% of respondents acknowledged having drug and/or alcohol problems, compared with 19% in 2023. The survey also found that 76% reported feeling down or depressed, 69% reported low self-confidence, and 21% experienced suicidal thoughts within the previous 12 months. All figures showed an increase on the previous year.

“Sarah joins us at a pivotal moment”, said Music Support co-founder and chair Matt Thomas. “As we approach our 10th anniversary, her role will be critical in ensuring that, from touring crews to executives, emerging artists to industry veterans, everyone in UK music knows that Music Support is here – and that accessing help is straightforward.”

Williams said, “The charity plays a vital role in championing the mental wellbeing of those working in our exhilarating but sometimes challenging industry, and delivers care with great compassion and understanding. I’m excited to help amplify the mission of Music Support, ensure those who need support know where to turn, and to help drive lasting change in the music industry.”
