German police are investigating the cause of a fire on a ferris wheel that injured at least 23 people at the Highfields festival (cap. 35,000) on Saturday, 17 August.

The CTS Eventim event at Störmthaler Lake near Leipzig saw a ferris wheel gondola catch fire at around 9pm (GMT) with the fire then spreading to a second car at the top of the wheel. Both gondolas were destroyed, according to a dpa news agency report.

Among those injured were ticket buyers and at least four police officers who were examined in hospital for possible smoke inhalation. No passengers were sat in the gondola when the fire started, according to the report.

The 16-18 August event was headlined by Macklemore, Rise Against, Peter Fox, Cro, Provinz, and Marsimoto.
