Christopher BarrettMalaysian-owned YTL has confirmed it will invest £2 billion in the Brabazon Bristol development, which includes a 19,500-capacity arena originally expected to open this year but that now looks unlikely to be completed before 2027.
The development in Bristol will include 6,500 homes, three new hotels, more than 3 million sq ft of commercial space and the carbon neutral YTL Arena, conferencing and exhibition space. The project is expected to deliver more than 30,000 jobs.
YTL acquired the disused Filton Airfield and associated Brabazon Hangars just north of Bristol In 2016. The 380-acre site is one of the largest brownfield development sites in the UK.
Set to be the UK’s fourth largest arena, and and the only one in South West England, the YTL Arena is expected to host more than 140 events per year. New travel infrastructure is being created including a railway station that is expected to connect Brabazon to Bristol Temple Meads in less than 15 minutes.
Business and Trade Secretary Jonathan Reynolds said, “This investment is incredible news for the UK and will create a generational transformation for North Bristol, delivering infrastructure, new schools and creating thousands of new homes and jobs in the region.”
