Christopher BarrettCelebrated Swiss event the Montreux Jazz Festival (MJF) is to make its debut in Africa in March 2026.
The Franschhoek Wine Valley will be the first African destination to host the Montreux Jazz Festival, which since it was founded by Claude Nobs in 1967 has proven a major draw for many of the world’s most revered musicians, including Prince, David Bowie, Miles Davis and Johnny Cash.
Over the years the event has been rolled out beyond its core city site, on the shore of Lake Geneva, to locations including Miami, Tokyo and Rio de Janeiro.
MJF Franschhoek founder Mark Goedvolk said, “Hosting the festival in Franschhoek offers a unique opportunity to bridge cultural divides and create meaningful connections between emerging South African artists and the world’s top international artists and music industry leaders. My hope is for MJF Franschhoek to stand as a beacon of excellence in hospitality and a vibrant celebration of musical talent, united by the power of music.”
MJF CEO Mathieu Jaton said the collaboration is a historic moment for the even brand: “We are honoured to work alongside local partners who share our passion for live music, creativity and hospitality.”
