Glasgow City Council has given the green light to a feasibility study into the city bidding to host the 2024 World Athletics Indoor Championships.

The study will lead to a recommendation later this year as to whether the city should launch a bid for the biennial Championships, which would be held at the Emirates Arena (cap. 5,000) – the venue that was scheduled to host the cancelled British Athletic Indoor Championships next month.

The bidding process is due to start in March, with an application deadline of 1 October. World Athletics are expected to make a decision on the host country in December.

A spokesman for Glasgow Life, a charitable organisation which oversees culture and sport on behalf of Glasgow City Council, said, ”Hosting the World Indoor Athletics Championships in 2024 would build on Glasgow’s success in hosting the European Indoor Athletics Championships in 2019, the European Championships in 2018 and the Commonwealth Games in 2014 as well as UEFA’s Euro 2020 matches this summer and the Cycling World Championships in 2023.”
