Max SteventonSteve Heap is to retire from his role as the Events Industry Forum (EIF) director in November, bringing his career in live music and outdoor events to a close after more than six decades.
Heap said his retirement had been brought forward by around a month following recent events, adding that his health had also contributed to the decision.
He has been involved in the live events industry since the age of 14, when he joined a music club before going on to perform in bands. Six years later, he left the band to work as a promoter and agent, organising gigs across the UK and Europe.
His career has since included thousands of gigs, dozens of festivals, a record label and work with the Association of Festival Organisers (AFO), where he also recently retired after being at the AFO since its founding in 1987. He has also worked as a consultant, university lecturer and charity volunteer, alongside his industry roles.
Heap has been involved with the Events Industry Forum and The Purple Guide for 15 years, and said he believes the organisations now need a review and reshaping. “Although there is a great deal of ongoing work yet to do, I think now is the time for new young blood to take this on,” he said.
“I do have some thoughts on a way forward but for now a new board and editor have the guidance of the writers of the review, FEI to work with.”
Heap has received a number of industry awards and recognitions during his career, including a Tribute of Excellence from the National Outdoor Events Association, a Lifetime Achievement Award from The Festival Awards, recognition from BAFA for his contribution to the festival sector and an Industry Legend Award from Access All Areas.
This year, Heap was awarded a National Fellowship of the Centre for Events and Festivals.
Reflecting on his career, Heap said he had “paddled my own canoe”, experiencing both successes and setbacks while continuing to work across the events sector.
“I have met and worked with some remarkable people from whom I have learned, some I have been able to teach, to share knowledge and experiences for the future and benefit of this outdoor events industry,” said Heap.
