Having been the first live entertainment venue in the world to gain A Greener Arena certification from A Greener Future (AGF), Glasgow’s OVO Hydro has become the first to achieve Commended status as part of the renewal of its Greener Arena accreditation.

AGF said the Scottish Exhibition Centre’s OVO Hydro (cap. 14,300) achieved the certification following a rigorous assessment involving a detailed analysis of transport, energy and power, waste, water usage, the local environment, CO2 emissions, and food and beverage.

Some of the key areas where the OVO Hydro scored highly was transport, with a 21% reduction in air travel for business and an increase in staff commuting via public and active transport. It has also created a Sustainability Toolkit that includes procurement advice and gives organisers recommendations on reducing food waste and local supplier guidance.

SEC MD of strategy and people Debbie McWilliams emphasised its commitment to achieving net zero by 2030, noting that the OVO Hydro’s Commended status reflects progress towards this goal.

Another area where the venue scored highly was local community engagement, with the introduction of apprenticeship schemes in health and safety, IT, and project management.

Additionally, the venue has increased community events, inspiring 2,200 young people through work experience, learning journey sessions, and educational tours.
