The Green Events Code of Practice (GECoP), a set of guidelines designed to reduce the environmental impact of events, has been revised to provide a nationally consistent framework for event organisers, local authorities and suppliers.

Targets have been updated in the second version of GECoP, including a 100% reduction in onsite fossil fuel consumption at live events by 2030. This aligns with wider creative, TV, and film industry commitments. HVO fuel is acknowledged as a transitional bridge where electric or green hydrogen solutions cannot yet meet power needs.

The update has been published by Vision for Sustainable Events in partnership with LIVE Green, with input from sustainability specialists A Greener Future, Creative Zero and Hope Solutions, alongside promoters Festival Republic and AEG.

Following a 2024 pilot with 10 local authorities, the revised code will be adopted by more than 20 UK cities in 2025. Vision said the long-term goal is to create a nationally consistent framework for assessing environmental performance across events.

Launched by Andrew Lansley, and Shambala co-founder and Vison chair Chris Johnson at the Event Production Show, the initial aim of the code was to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 50% in time for 2030 – which the new update maintains. Lansley spoke to Access All Areas earlier this year to discuss the code in detail.

Johnson said, “Fundamentally, the Green Code aims to answer the question, ‘What does good look like?’ This refresh brings the code up to date, providing clarity for the sector on best practice and on the action we need to take to achieve meaningful reductions in the environmental impacts of events.”
