Christopher BarrettLive Nation is set to operate a redeveloped venue in Weston-super-Mare that since it opened in 1937 has hosted talent ranging from Laurel & Hardy to Banksy.
North Somerset Council has approved a 25-year lease agreement for the Tropicana venue (pictured) to Live Nation. It said once the redevelopment work is complete the venue will consist of purpose-built indoor and outdoor entertainment spaces.
The council has been granted £20 million to redevelop Tropicana by the government, together with an additional £2.7m capital funding from Arts Council England.
Live Nation said it will work with the council to bring the Tropicana, which was formerly an outdoor pool, back to life with a programme of music and live events from 2028. The redeveloped venue, which is subject to planning consent, is expected to have an audience capacity of around 10,000 once complete.
North Somerset Council leader Mike Bell said, “Live Nation aims to make the Tropicana an all-year event venue which will ultimately increase footfall to our region, create higher accommodation occupancy rates, give our retail businesses an uplift, grow local supply chains and create more skills and employment opportunities for our communities.”
Live Nation SVP of boutique events UK Eddie Kemsley said, “We look forward to working with local businesses, stakeholders and members of the public and community in the coming months to ensure a successful and happy start to this next chapter for the venue.”
