Brand experience agency TRO took the MINI and BMW brands back in time at the Goodwood Revival.
Nostalgia is a powerful emotional tool that many brands attempt to harness, but few can do so effectively. Invoking a sense of longing for the past, while aligning with the future, is no easy feat. Nostalgia connects with universal human experiences—comfort, familiarity, and simpler times—which, when evoked well, can create deep emotional ties. However, the challenge lies in ensuring that these sentiments don’t overshadow a brand’s progress. This delicate balance was at the heart of TRO’s approach when bringing Mini and BMW to life at Goodwood Revival, an annual event celebrating motoring history from 1947 to 1966. Through immersive experiences, TRO captured the heritage of these iconic brands while keeping their modern offerings at the forefront.
Issi’s Laundrette and the MINI Experience: nostalgia meets innovation
Mini, with its 65-year history, has an emotional resonance with a wide range of people. TRO centred its activation around the Mini Classic, creating Issi’s Laundrette as a playful homage to the 1960s. According to TRO account manager Blythe Grieve, the laundrette was “a space for all to enjoy, the key focus being the Mini Classic. Issi took centre stage, and there was a photo opportunity for everyone.”
TRO cleverly blended nostalgia with contemporary elements, using the laundrette to showcase Mini’s modern innovations. Mini’s OLED screens, allowing owners to personalise their cars, were integrated into vintage washing machines. Blythe explained, “It was a great way to be playful within the event’s aesthetic while showcasing how far the brand has come.”
The playful tone extended to Issi’s Press, where guests could take home personalised Mini-branded handkerchiefs, reflecting Mini’s commitment to individuality. The Bubble Shop, created with Mr Simms Sweet Shop, offered nostalgic sweets and drinks, adding another layer of charm to the event. Additionally, a Spin to Win event allowed random visitors to win prizes like MINI merchandise and vouchers. “Events like Spin to Win kept the energy high,” noted Blythe, ensuring everyone left with a lasting memory of MINI.
Performances by the Charlalas, a trio singing 1940s to 1960s classics, added further immersion into the vintage world. Yet, despite the nostalgic setting, Mini’s modern touches—like the OLED screens—were seamlessly integrated, ensuring attendees remembered Mini as a leader in innovation.
Balancing heritage with modernity
A key challenge for TRO was balancing MINI’s heritage with its contemporary identity. “Mini is all about celebrating its heritage while showing how it’s developed from the Mini Classic to the New Mini Family,” said Blythe. The laundrette backdrop rooted guests in the past, while advanced technology reminded everyone that Mini continues to evolve.
Car enthusiasts were a key audience, and TRO ensured the Mini Classic was the centrepiece of the experience, tapping into the deep emotional connection people have with their cars. “Everyone has a Mini story,” Blythe added, “whether it’s a classic or the one they drive today.” TRO ensured people could share those stories, demonstrating how Mini’s modern family retains the same elements people love about the Classic.
BMW Arcade: a playful side to performance and innovation
For BMW, TRO created the BMW Arcade, an activation showcasing a more light-hearted side of the brand. Though BMW is known for high-performance vehicles, the Arcade allowed Revival guests to engage with BMW in a playful, interactive way. Charlie Li, strategy director at TRO, explained, “The BMW Arcade allowed us to show a different side of BMW’s personality, embracing the more playful aspects of the brand.” This approach resonated well with Revival attendees, offering an escape into simpler, carefree times.
Still, as Charlie noted, the focus on nostalgia needed to enhance, not overshadow, BMW’s values of performance and innovation. “Nostalgia can be powerful, but the challenge is ensuring it enhances rather than overshadows the contemporary story.” The BMW Arcade framed BMW’s future through its past, reminding guests that despite the brand’s rich history, it’s always looking ahead.
Engaging car enthusiasts: deepening emotional connections
Both Mini and BMW focused on car enthusiasts, who engage more deeply with brands. “Car fans come with a pre-existing emotional attachment,” said Charlie, adding that TRO sought to “reinforce and amplify the bond” these fans already felt with the brand. Whether through behind-the-scenes insights or unique engagements, TRO ensured enthusiasts left feeling even more connected to BMW and Mini.
A lasting impact: nostalgia as a gateway to the future
Through their work with Mini and BMW, TRO demonstrated the power of nostalgia not just as a marketing tool, but as a way of deepening emotional connections with both casual visitors and die-hard enthusiasts. By creating immersive environments that honoured the past while subtly pointing towards the future, they allowed attendees to engage with both brands on multiple levels.
The challenge of blending nostalgia with contemporary brand narratives was expertly handled. As Charlie put it, “It’s not about living in the past, but using the past to reframe the present and future.” For Mini and BMW, that meant crafting experiences that left a lasting emotional impact, ensuring that while guests were reminded of fond memories, they were also looking forward to what comes next.
In the end, TRO succeeded in using nostalgia not as a crutch, but as a bridge, connecting the heritage of Mini and BMW with their future, all within the uniquely immersive world of Goodwood Revival… all despite the weather.
