Max SteventonA new mains electricity connection is being installed at Finsbury Park, London, to supply power to large-scale outdoor events, in a move aimed at reducing reliance on temporary generators.
The project, led by Festival Republic, will enable stages and other event infrastructure to draw electricity directly from the grid. The change is intended to lower emissions associated with diesel-powered generators, which are commonly used at outdoor festivals.
The connection will also allow events to operate using renewable energy tariffs, increasing the proportion of electricity sourced from renewable generation.
Haringey Council, which manages Finsbury Park, has been working with Festival Republic under a five-year agreement signed in 2023. The agreement includes plans to improve infrastructure for major events held in the park.
The initiative aligns with wider industry efforts to reduce environmental impact. The Show Must Go On Report identifies the replacement of fossil fuel-based power with renewable electricity as a priority for the live events sector and calls for expanded grid access in outdoor venues.
Festival Republic MD Melvin Benn said, “Installing a purpose-built mains power supply in Finsbury Park continues our long-term commitment to producing sustainable large-scale outdoor events and festivals, as well as lowering the impact of event operations in the park and to the local community.”
Haringey Council leader Cllr Peray Ahmet said, “Connecting the festival site to mains power cuts emissions and enables us to deliver the same fantastic music experience in a much more sustainable way. By doing this, we are helping set the standard for large-scale events.
