Max SteventonA fleet of electric bicycle ambulances will be deployed at the London Winter Run next month as part of a new medical response initiative led by Acute Ambulance & Medical Services (AAMS).
The programme, operated by the Milton Keynes-based medical services organisation, introduces e-bike ambulances for use in official medical provision at large-scale sporting events.
According to the organisation, the fleet is intended to improve response times in crowded environments where access for traditional ambulances or motorcycles can be limited.
The e-bike ambulances are designed to move through dense crowds and confined spaces while carrying medical-grade equipment. AAMS said the bikes will allow medics to reach participants experiencing exhaustion, dehydration, injuries, or medical episodes more quickly during mass participation events such as marathons and road races.
While motorcycle response units are commonly used at sporting events, AAMS stated that e-bike ambulances have not previously been deployed in an official medical capacity at sports events. The organisation said the electric bikes offer zero-emission operation and reduced noise, alongside increased manoeuvrability.
Each e-bike ambulance is equipped with first-aid and trauma kits, a defibrillator (AED), airway management tools, bleeding control kits, communication radios, and high-visibility safety lighting.
AAMS said the fleet will be used across high-attendance sporting events, urban public gatherings, festivals, and other large-scale public activities.
AAMS director Kieren Gibson said, “We are redefining what responsive, clean and safe event medical support looks like. Big sporting events require rapid, flexible emergency response, and these bikes allow our team to reach patients faster, more safely, and more sustainably than ever before.”
