LIVE (Live music Industry Venues & Entertainment) has published an open letter calling on artists to support a petition advocating for a more sustainable live music industry.

The umbrella group, representing 15 live music organisations, has spearheaded several sustainability initiatives led by its working group LIVE Green. They include LIVE Green Clauses; a contractual clause template for artists booking contracts, designed to galvanise industry-wide action and sharply reduce the environmental impact of live events.

LIVE Green has now published an open letter to artists, inviting them to sign a petition as a demonstration of artists’ appetite to include the clauses in their booking contracts. Artists who have already added their names to the list of signatories include Bonobo, Absolute, Kosmo Kint, Madame Gandhi and Narciss. LIVE said it is speaking with talent agencies that have indicated they will propose the adoption of green clauses to their managers and artist clients.

Alongside the clause template, LIVE Green has also created a LIVE Green Resource Hub, designed to respond to the content of the clauses, which highlights considerations for addressing each individual aspect, as well as further resource and guidance from sustainability experts in the industry to help all stakeholders in the live sector progress and implement their own sustainability efforts.

LIVE Green’s initiative won support from organisations including Earth Percent, A Greener Future, Featured Artist Coalition, Music Managers Forum, Julie’s Bicycle, Music Declares Emergency, Association For Electronic Music, Music Sustainability Alliance and Tour Production Group.

LIVE Green impact consultant Ross Patel said, “For decades, musicians speaking out on social justice has changed our world for the better… this is an opportunity to take a stand at a pivotal time in our history and to change our industry and our lives for the better.”
