Max SteventonGrand Départ GB has launched a nationwide recruitment campaign for 9,000 volunteers ahead of the Tour de France and Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift Grands Départs in summer 2027.
The volunteers, known as JOY Makers, will support all six stages across Scotland, England and Wales, assisting with event operations and spectator experience during the races.
Applications are open from 27 May until 1 September 2026 via the Grand Départ GB volunteer portal. Anyone aged 16 and over can apply, with no previous volunteering experience required. Training will be provided for all roles.
The JOY Makers programme forms part of JOY, the Grand Départ GB 2027 social impact programme, which aims to increase participation in volunteering and cycling activities, particularly among underrepresented groups and people aged 16 to 25.
Those aged between 18 and 25 will also be eligible for the Readiness to Work scheme, which will provide employability skills training and mentoring alongside volunteering experience.
To mark the launch of the programme, presenter and broadcaster Radzi Chinyanganya joined current volunteers (pictured) supporting the Grands Départs initiative.
British Cycling and its partners are also calling on government to commit £30m towards new and upgraded cycling facilities across Britain, building on the Places to Ride programme launched following the 2019 UCI Yorkshire Road World Championships.
“I wouldn’t be where I am today if I wasn’t a volunteer when I was in my teens,” said Chinyanganya. “I was a media volunteer and now I’m working in media – I’m living proof that volunteering can lead to something amazing. I’m so excited for everyone to get involved – it will truly be an unforgettable experience.”
