With a consultancy ongoing around the Event Industry Forum’s (EIF) proposed introduction of a Primary Authority initiative linked to its Purple Guide, stakeholders took to the main stage at the Event Production Show to explain why they believe it will benefit the events industry.

For event organisers operating across multiple local authority boundaries, inconsistency in approach can be a major challenge. The team behind the proposed Primary Authority for events say it will streamline local authority relations, enabling a single authority to provide consistent regulatory advice on compliance matters to event operators throughout the country.

Proponents, Brighton & Hove City Council’s outdoor events development manager Ian Baird, and EIF director Jim Winship, outlined their case for the initiative and took multiple questions from the audience questioning its need, validity, and method of introduction. They said that contrary to some interpretations, there is no intention of using it to turn the Purple Guide into anything other than guidance.

Overseeing what promised to be a heated debate was Anne Marie Chebib, chair of the United Kingdom Crowd Management Association.
