Events venue Hedsor House is set to star in Dustin Hoffman’s directorial debut on BBC 2 on New Year’s Day.

Hedsor House takes centre stage on terrestrial television on New Year’s Day when BBC 2 screen the highly acclaimed movie Quartet which was filmed entirely on the historic country estate.

Hedsor House, a privately-owned Georgian country mansion set in 100-acres of magnificent grounds in Taplow, Buckinghamshire, had a starring role in Dustin Hoffman’s directorial debut along with an all-star cast including Dame Maggie Smith, Sir Tom Courtenay, Billy Connolly, Pauline Collins, Sheridan Smith and Sir Michael Gambon.

Chosen by the film’s producers and location scouts for its sheer character and charm, the 18th Century home of Augusta the Princess of Wales, mother of King George III, was transformed into Quartet’s fictional Beecham House — a stately retirement home for opera singers.

Hedsor House received rave reviews throughout the international media with the New York Times describing Hedsor as “a luxurious stone pile played by the handsomely Downton-esque Hedsor House” and The Guardian writing “The house rivals Downton…the grounds put Kew to shame.”

Today Hedsor House is privately run by the fourth generation of the Shephard family as an award-winning and thriving venue for exclusive weddings, events and filming.

Quartet was shot over a three-month period in 2011 with the venue continuing to host weddings throughout the hectic filming schedule. Hedsor House’s domed Grand Hall, majestic Ballroom, Central Staircase and Boudoir as well as the stunning grounds and landscaped gardens were all transformed into key sets for Quartet.

“As soon as we visited Hedsor House we knew it was special,” said Nick O’Hagan, line producer of Quartet. “Hedsor House is not only stunning, but as it is privately owned by the Shephard family it crucially offered us exclusivity and privacy while filming as well as the flexibility to create Beecham House just as we wanted it.”

The movie went on general release in 2012 to critical acclaim and was available on DVD from last year.

Hedsor House’s role in the film triggered huge interest and led to the Shephard family hosting outdoor film viewings and public tours of Hedsor House for the first time in its 900-year history.

Quartet is being broadcast at 9pm on New Year’s Day on BBC 2.
