Thousands of people across 15 UK cities took part in the inaugural Stand Up To Cancer fundraising event March on Cancer on 11 October.

Cancer Research UK commissioned new Essex-based AV supplier Showcase AVi to be the AV partner at nine of these events, including London, Birmingham and Cardiff.

The purpose of the event was for participants to remember people they have lost to cancer, march for those who are fighting cancer, and celebrate the lives saved by research whilst at the same time raising vital funds for research of all cancer types.

At the start of each event, video messages from patients, survivors, doctors, scientists, and celebrities were shown on Showcase’s large mobile LED screens. Everyone featured gave impassioned monologues about how cancer has affected their lives or the lives of their friends and families.

Social media messages were also streamed on the big screens. Using TweetWall Pro software, participants could text or tweet messages sharing their story, words of encouragement or memories of loved ones, which were then displayed on the big screens across all locations. This helped ensure participants across all 15 locations felt part of a collective force, to empower, inspire and create a movement.

Picture in picture functionality allowed video content, social media and live audience filming to all be shown at one time on the screen.

Ben Collings, Showcase AVi sales and operations director, worked with Cancer Research UK’s event organisers for several months in order to design the best solution.

“With 15 events happening simultaneously across the UK we needed to ensure the equipment, software and internet technology could handle the varying content that was required in order to deliver the Stand Up To Cancer message,” Collings said. “Thanks to the meticulous planning by everyone involved all of the events were successfully staged across the UK, with content later being shown on Channel 4.”

As well as nine mobile LED screens, Showcase AVi also supplied the camera and content management systems, complimented by a high specification PA system in Norwich and London.
