Glastonbury Festival has banned the sale of potentially racist Native American headdresses and revealed the charitable beneficiaries of 2013’s event.

The offending headwear was the recent subject of a Change.org petition, which criticised the item for perpetuating negative racial stereotypes.

“There has long been consensus among indigenous civil rights activists in North America about the wearing of headdresses by non-Natives – that it is an offensive and disrespectful form of cultural appropriation, that it homogenises diverse indigenous peoples, and that it perpetuates damaging, archaic and racist stereotypes,” the statement reads.

Glastonbury has since added the item to its list of products that can not be sold without strict prior approval.

Meanwhile, those looking to trade at Glastonbury, can apply here.

Charitable causes

In other news, Glastonbury Festival has revealed that it was able to give £2m to causes including Oxfam, Greenpeace and WaterAid.

“There were several hundred local charities and volunteer groups supported in 2013. There are too many to list. We are very proud to be able to support so many great causes. Thank you to everyone who comes to the Festival for making this possible,” read a statement from Emily and Michael Eavis.
